Rough n' Tumble
Recent rough animations that were a joy to make.
As I’ve mentioned before, I love the rough lines stage of an animation project. You can see the artist thinking, planning, and trying things out. All without the pressure of refining the final result.
Today I have a few rough animations for you. Each one of these loops has been on the back burner due to life, liberty and the pursuit of being a somewhat functional freelancer. Enjoy!
Lion By Jackson
My oldest nephew Jackson is an artist in his own right. He draws with intensity and always seems to have a story attached. I admire his ability to “write” with pictures at such a young age (he’s almost 8).
I treated the initial animation of this drawing like I would a professional project; I inferred motion from the design and poses, adding ideas that I think could help accentuate the tone of the drawing.
In this loop you can see I added a roar to the Lion while doing my best to maintain the integrity of the original posing and design. I also added some tiny grass lines to emphasize the forward walk.
I’m excited to clean this one up. I’d like to use this loop to experiment with some new softwares (Moho, TVpaint) when time allows.
Boot Boy Print Cube
Since I started &RISO, I’ve been trying to find ways of promoting the risograph program and workshops. I animated this lil’ guy as part of a promo idea, which I would like to finish!
The Risograph printer can shoot out pages at an alarming speed if you allow it, so I wanted to play with that idea visually.
I really enjoyed exploring the side by side motion of this character; adding a bit of perspective to the cube and boots. I will clean this up one day (once I make a design frame) and it will be grand.
Summer Travel (NYC)
I took a trip to New York City last year for the Pictoplasma conference. For a city that’s so close, the travel felt tedious. I had taken the amtrak there previously and that was a bit much, so I opted for the plane this time. Still wasn’t great.
With travel on the mind, I channeling that thinking into a morphing loop going through the distinct stages of my trip, ending in a bed at my airbnb.
I hadn’t made a straight up morphing loop in a while. It’s a great exercise to bring some joy back into your animation and to see what you can get away with!
I also made some design frames for this looping sequence. I love this color palette and the “shine” on the train seats.
One day I will clean this up and it will also be grand.
Thanks for reading, stay rough.
If you’d like to support my work, I have some new risograph prints up in my shop.

Love the Jackson animation - he will be thrilled, especially if you add a ""roar sound!
