Suspended Animation

A loop and some sketches made during air travel delays.

Flying is getting worse and worse. But the delays can give me unexpected freedom from my own creative expectations of myself. There’s nothing to do but wait, sit, think, and draw if I feel like it.

So today I present you with animated and sketched ideas made in the purgatory of flight delays.

“Delayed Until 3:12pm”

Playing with a combination of print and digital additions, this cel animated loop was made on the ipad almost two years ago. I found it in my archive and wanted to breath some new life into it after traveling this past month. If you look closely at the animating type, you can see my flight number and delay time.

In the timelapse below, you’ll see that I started out with a completely different idea and pivoted halfway through. To be honest, that first idea is still very intriguing, but I couldn’t resolve the speed logic between the plane and cars:

Airport Sketches

I’m not someone who shares their loose sketches that often. Maybe it’s because I want to seem polished and impressive? In an effort to let go of that tendency, we’re not doing that with these sketches:

Banking to the right

Plane from the front, an engine, signs, stair cars, and checkerboard tarmac houses (not sure what those are called)
